20 Things I’ve Learned by 20

Each year we grow older, we grow wiser as well. There is so much to learn about ourselves and the world. Every day of life we learn more and more. Over time, we learn valuable life lessons that better who we are. Over my 20 years of life I have learned many valuable lessons, here are 20 of them.

  1. Take more pictures. You’ll enjoy looking back on the memories.
  2. Don’t let anyone tell you how to feel. Your feelings aren’t something you can control and you have every right to feel the way you do.
  3. Don’t waste time on someone who doesn’t value your feelings. Instead, find people who care about you and who are genuinely interested in your company.
  4. You don’t need to have it all figured out. Life is a journey and you will figure things out along the way.
  5. You will change, and you will grow. Don’t fight it. It’s for the best.
  6. You can’t depend on others. People will let you down. The only person you can depend on is yourself.
  7. Be yourself whether others like you or not. Those opinions of others really don’t matter as much as you might think they do.
  8. Everyone has a bad day, but that doesn’t make it a bad life.
  9. If you truly want something, you have to work for it. Not everything comes easy in life. Putting effort into something you want will lead to reward.
  10. There are tons of mistakes to be made, and even more lessons to learn. Don’t dwell on mistakes or things you could have done better. Just know for next time.
  11. Nobody knows anyone completely. Even if you think you know someone inside and out, you don’t. You have no idea what this person has happening in their head and all the backstory of this person’s life.
  12. Always be honest. If something is bothering you, don’t deny it. Speak up. People fear the truth far too much. Honesty is an admirable quality.
  13. Expecting others to make you happy will more often than not lead to disappointment. Happiness is a choice only you can make.
  14. Figure yourself out before you try to figure out others. Growing up teaches us a lot about ourselves. Learn about who you are and what you are interested before you try to learn everything about someone else.
  15. Surrounding yourself with good people will make yourself a better person. It’s important to have friends that give off positive vibes. Make friends who aren’t afraid to be themselves and are free of judgement. Don’t make friends who care too much about what others think and who make you feel bad about yourself.
  16. Take care of your body. Eat healthy foods and go for a run. You will feel healthier and happier.
  17. If he doesn’t like you for who you are, he doesn’t deserve you.
  18. Odds are, whatever is bothering you now won’t be important in a week, so let it go.
  19. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. Life is short, and you never know when someone may leave.
  20. Stay true to yourself. Don’t let others dictate your life. Be yourself and honor your values.

Each year brings new and exciting adventures that teach us a lot about ourselves. Over my 20 years of life, I’ve learned so much from my experiences. Still, there is so much in this world I haven’t yet seen and that I can’t wait to learn.

A Week Without Washing My Hair

Whenever I tell people I wash my hair every day, I always get a lot of reactions like “you’re not supposed to do that” or “that’s really bad for your hair.” I know, I know, hair is apparently not supposed to be washed everyday that way it can produce its own natural oils. But I can’t help it. My hair gets greasy. And every time I say this, I get the response “that’s only because your hair is used to being washed daily.” Yeah, yeah, whatever. I can’t help it. I can’t stand the grease to be able to withhold from washing my hair long enough that this doesn’t happen. But this week, I challenged myself. I challenged myself to go a full week without washing my hair. I got to try out some new and fun hairstyles with this little experiment, but besides that, let’s see how it worked out for me.

Sunday

IMG_8564

I washed my hair Saturday night, leaving my hair fresh and clean for Sunday. Unfortunately, I made the poor decision to go to the beach today which afterwards, left my hair salty and knotty. Overall, I’m off to a rough start.

Monday

IMG_8518.JPG

If I could go back, I would have straightened my hair from the jump. Still, my hair actually came out pretty well despite the second day after a windy beach day. My hair remained sleek and surprisingly, not greasy.

Tuesday

IMG_8542.JPG

By Tuesday my hair was starting to feel slightly greasy. I dabbed at my roots with some Witch Hazel in hopes to dry it out and pulled my straightened locks into a half-up/half-down pony. Surprisingly, I didn’t need to touch up my hair with a straightening iron at all, as my straight hair had mostly stayed in tact.

Wednesday

IMG_8531.JPG

I knew putting my hair down this late into the week was a risky move, but I went with it. No regrets quite yet either, after curling my hair, my hair had lots of texture and volume that I quite liked.

Thursday

IMG_8529.JPG

Thursday I regretted my choice to wear my hair down because I woke up with extremely ready hair. Again, I dabbed at my roots with some Witch Hazel, and put my hair up into another half-up/half-down pony. This time, I touched up my curls and although a bit frizzy, I thought my hair looked cute and fun.

Friday

IMG_8551.JPG

It is a rare occasion that I wear my hair up, but the grease began to get out of hand and to be too much for even Witch Hazel to fix, so I opted for a pony. I found the ponytail to be great for unwashed hair because my hair didn’t look, nor feel greasy. It stayed out of my face and I don’t think my hair looked all that bad.

Saturday

IMG_8563.JPG

Sorry for the shade over my face, but by Saturday I was completely over this. My hair felt disgusting and I was left with no choice but to throw it in a bun because it looked terrible. Saturday after work, I went home and washed my hair, and it was the best I felt in a week.

After taking this challenge, I decided I will never go a week without washing my hair again. However, I realized that I do not have to wash my hair everyday. Now, I wash my hair every other day. I have to admit, I notice no difference between the health of my hair, but I do save time and money so I guess that’s a plus!

Goal Completed + Tips on Finding an Internship

A few months ago I posted an article about a goal I had to find a summer internship. I wanted to announce that I have successfully completed this goal and found a summer internship! After a lot of stress, searching, and submissions, I finally found a great internship opportunity for myself.

Trying to find the perfect internship was extremely stressful. Originally, I landed an internship opportunity in New York, but decided to not follow through due to the travel and housing expenses. I found an internship closer to where I live that has the possibility to grow into a job opportunity and I am super excited! I am now interning for The Power of the Patient Project that you can learn more about here.

Finding an internship was difficult, and while I’m no pro at this, I would like to give some advice for any of you looking for internships.

  1. Stay open minded. Apply for jobs that may not even be in your field. There is a lot of experience to be learned.
  2. Apply for as many internships as possible. Even apply for internships you might not seem too interested in because you can use each interview as practice to nail that important interview you finally get.
  3. Watch out for scams! Use websites like glassdoor.com to search companies and read reviews. It’ll save you a lot of time and travel.
  4. Use sites like LinkedIn and Internships.com. They are very useful and make finding/applying for jobs so simple.
  5. Follow your gut. Interning is important, but if you find an internship that you just don’t think is right for you, don’t take it. Keep applying and you’ll eventually find something better suited for you.
  6. Don’t give up! Even when you think there’s no hope, there is.

I will keep you all updated with my intern experience, and good luck to all of you searching for internships!

June Favorites

I can’t believe my summer is already half way over. I’m heartbroken that this is my last summer and there isn’t much that has happened so far to make it memorable. I have two months left to make my last summer, the best summer.

Anyways, here are my favorites for the month of June.

Beauty

  1. Origins GinZing Eye Cream– This eye cream has really been helping with puffiness underneath of my eyes. Even though the dark circles I was born with seem impossible to rid of, this at least helps for the time being.
  2. Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer (Tiki)– I talked about this last month, but I literally use it every single day. I use it as bronzer, as highlighter, as eyeshadow, and as blush. It’s all I wear.
  3. Dove Beauty Bar– This might sound like such a silly product, but I swear by it for my skin time routine. This bar of soap saved my skin after years of using face washes that were too rough. A simple bar of soap can work wonders for your skin.

Fashion

  1. Rings– I have been loving accessorizing with chunky rings. I think they add so much and really even help a simple tee shirt and jeans outfit stand out. I can’t take them off! IMG_2990
  2. Crystals– I’ve been really into crystals in general, fashion ones and regular ones. I’ve been really getting into meditation and I’ve begun to research the power of crystals. I decided to put crystals under the fashion category because they also really are so beautiful. I’ve been buying beautiful rings and necklaces on Etsy that contain crystals, just like this ring.il_570xN.444969037_803pIMG_2986.JPG
  3. Necklace– Again with the crystals, I love this Lepidolite gem necklace. It’s so simple and so beautiful. Not to mention purple is my all time favorite color. The crescent moon pendant also looks stunning with the gem stone. The only thing I am not a fan of is that mine came with a black chain instead of silver (the black was less money.) I have to get a silver one.il_570xN.1033045212_th5a.jpg
  4. Wedges– Since I intern and I’m supposed to dress business casual, wedges have been my go to. They’re perfect for summer, easy to walk in, and super cute!IMG_2981.JPG
  5. Skater skirts– Skater skirts are so versatile- I can dress them up and wear them to my internship, or I can wear them casually when I go out with friends. I love wearing skirts in the summer because they’re so cute and girly and I think are overall a staple for summer. The one I am wearing is from Forever 21, but I linked a similar one!

Entertainment

  1. Elsewhere– This book is such an interesting concept. I have to say, when I first started reading it, it seemed kind of childish, but it really is so unique. The book is about a 15 year old girl who dies in a bicycle accident. The girl is taken to a place called “Elsewhere” in her after life. In Elsewhere, people age backwards until they are 0. Once someone turns 0, he/she is taken back to Earth and rebirthed.
  2. Orange is the New Black– Of course this is a June favorite. This show is so addicting, it’s unreal. I always forget just how much I love it until a new season comes out. Then I’m immediately hooked. The show is so dark and full of so many surprises, and it always ends on a huge cliff hanger that leaves you wanting more.
  3. Groovebook– I prefer having physical copies of things rather than storing everything digitally, in fear of everything getting deleted. Grosbeak allows me to print 100 pictures a month straight from my iPhone. The pictures are mailed in a little booklet to my house. Easy and convenient.
  4. Mango Health– Instead of setting alarms on my phone that always frighten me, Mango Health vibrates whenever it is time to take my medicine. It also lets you keep track of your medications and it lets you check off when you have taken it for the day. It even keeps track of your missed pills.

Food

  1. Bananas– Last month I wrote about bananas and peanut butter, but now I want to write just about bananas. I love bananas. I eat at least one banana a day. They are honestly just my all time favorite snack.
  2. Acai bowls– Acai bowls are crazy expensive, so I learned how to make my own. It’s actually very simple. Blend an acai powder with a frozen banana and protein powder in a blend, pour into a bowl, add granola and your favorite fruits, maybe top with some honey or peanut butter- and bam! An acai bowl for a reasonable price.

That’s it for the month of June. I hope you all found something worth trying out in this post, thanks for reading!

OOTD- Summer Concert!

Recently, I was able to attend Radio 104.5’s Birthday Show and it was awesome! I wrote about Day 2 last week here, and I have to say, I really had a great time. The weather was beautiful- hot and sunny during the day, and cool and breezy at night.

IMG_8588.JPG

I wore a simple outfit of just a black bralette bought at Forever 21 and black high waisted shorts that are the brand Mystic. I didn’t want to accessorize too much in fear of losing something, but I did wear a simple, silver ring. Also (not pictured) I wore some knock off all black vans because I knew I would be in grass all day and I didn’t want to get any of my nice shoes muddy.

IMG_8590.JPG

IMG_8585.JPG

I actually did my makeup for the first time all summer, which I picked a very awful day to do this since I melted within the first hour. Still, I thought the orange and pink eyeshadows looked perfect for summer and the winged eyeliner really pulled together the look.

Overall, the look wasn’t anything crazy, but comfortable and cute for a day spent in the sun listening to all my favorite bands.

Radio 104.5 Birthday Show Day 2

The 104.5 Birthday Show is officially over and I have post concert depression, but I have to say day 2 was AMAZING! Unlike day 1, the weather was perfect. The day started out a bit hot, but extremely sunny, and the night ended beautifully cool and breezy. Absolutely no complaints weather wise.

I’m sad I missed Marian Hill and also super sad about Northern Faces, but I could’ve never survived a whole day out there when water bottles cost $7. Disappointing, but there’s no way.

The first performer I saw was Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness and he was so much better live than I had expected. I think Andrew McMahon has such a soothing and pretty voice and he really is incredible live. I really enjoyed laying out in the sun and listening to him sing.

Next, was Kaleo. He’s got that whole soulful vibe going which is cool, but he’s not really my favorite. I would’ve much rather heard Marian Hill in all honestly. Her music is personally more my style. Still, he was another performer that was pleasant to listen to while lying out in the grass soaking up the sun.

Bleachers also weren’t necessarily my favorite to hear live even though overall they do produce some really awesome music. Maybe it’s because I was so far in the back and could’t really see anything that I wasn’t really into it that much. Still, it was kinda cool to hear “I Wanna Get Better” live.

Foster the People is when the show got really good. Foster the People was amazing! They opened with “Helena Beat” which was perfect, and closed with “Houdini”, which was even more perfect. I really liked hearing the classic, “Pumped Up Kicks” live, but my personal favorite performance they had was “Coming of Age.” I was a huge fan.

The reason I bought these tickets was to see my all time favorite band, the Killers. Let me tell you, it was a dream come true. It’s funny because throughout the whole concert, everyone was just sitting in the grass just listening to the music, but as soon as the closing act (the Killers) come on, everyone’s up, singing along, and extremely hype. The Killers were even better live than I had expected. Brandon Flowers stage presence is just unreal. Not to mention, the setlist is everything I could’ve hoped for. They opened with “Mr. Brightside”, which was expected but still incredible. They played one of my all time favorite songs which I did not expect, “For Reasons Unknown.” I literally freaked out when they started playing this I love this song so much, and I’m so beyond happy I got to see it performed live. They also played a new song called “Run for Cover” which I’m totally into. The only thing I’m slightly disappointed about is that they didn’t play “My List,” which they played the night before in Atlantic City. This just means I’m going to have to go to another concert and hope they play it. Overall, it was an amazing night and I’m still suffering from post concert depression four days later.

Body Journey

I have found setting goals for myself and posting them publicly really help increase my motivation to accomplish each goal. This goal may be the most challenging so far due to a combination of my busy schedule, and pure laziness, but I am determined to become stronger and healthier. While I want to build a better physique, my main focus is my health and to see how much of a difference changes in my diet and exercise can make. I have always been comfortable and satisfied with my body. I’m a very petite girl and I have come to accept it. This isn’t so much about image, it’s about health, and becoming the best ‘me’ possible. Life is a journey and every day I want to try to make myself a little bit better than I was yesterday. And this includes my health and fitness.

I have always been slightly underweight. I want to gain muscle and become stronger and leaner. I want to tone my body and improve the overall shape I am in.

I will begin this journey with a workout plan and a healthy meal plan. My goal is to work out 5 days a week. I started following a workout plan created by Jen Ferruggia called Bikini Body Workouts. I find this workout plan perfect for beginners like me. It is not too challenging, but just challenging enough to leave me sore the next day. I already feel a difference.

As for my diet, here is what I eat in a week:

CHEAT DAY!!

Of course my diet may not exactly follow this schedule and some things change day to day based on what I have in my house and what is available to me, but for the most part, these are the foods I keep in my diet. Not everything is perfectly healthy, but it’s a great combination for me of nutrition without ridding myself of all of my favorite things. Not to mention these recipes are simple and do not take an excessive amount of time for preparation.

I’m excited to work on myself and my body and to become the best me possible. I want to become healthy and strong and I am determined to stick to it.

May Favorites

May is over and summer has officially begun! I’m excited to discuss my favorites for this month with all of you because I’ve got a lot. Also, I linked all of the products if you are interested in checking any of these out!

Beauty

  1. Hawaiian Topic Dark Tanning Oil– okay, I know a lot of people flip when I say I like to use tanning oil, but I think tanning oil is great when used safely. At the start of summer, I love to use a bit of tanning oil on my body and soak in the sun for about an hour or two just to start my summer tan. This tanning oil is great because I darken so fast without burning and get that summer tan in no time without spending an excessive amount of time outside baking my skin. It’s perfect to use at the start of summer.
  2. Sephora Pearl Face Mask– this face mask is great for brightening the skin. I love using the Sephora face masks in general because they aren’t too expensive and are perfect for a little spa day. They make my skin feel much cleaner and fresh.
  3. Smith’s Rosebud Salve– I talked about this in my last favorites post and I will keep talking about it because it is 100% my holy grail of lip moisturizers. My lips get so dry and I swear this is the only product that helps. Not to mention one little jar lasts a lifetime.
  4. Mally Face Defender BB Cream Foundation– I’ve been loving this BB cream because it’s so light and perfect for summer. It also is great for my acne prone skin and doesn’t clog my pores. I currently wear the color medium light, but will probably go up a shade as I get tanner.
  5. Mally Poreless Perfecion Glowing Foundation– I use this product on top of my BB cream and together makes the perfect result. This powder alone is not quite enough coverage for me, but it really ratifies my face without looking cake-y. I find it to be the perfect powder for sealing in my foundation and eliminating an oily T-zone. I wear this in light.
  6. Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer (Tiki)– I use this bronzer in the shade Tiki and it works as the perfect highlight for summer. Since it’s actually a bronzer, the shade is perfect to highlight my summer glow. It’s dark to add a bit of color, but is so illuminating that it really brightens my face. It’s also great to use as a bronze eyeshadow. Overall, it’s a very versatile product that can be used on a wide range of complexions.
  7. IT Cosmetics CC+ Radiance Palette– This palette has been perfect for adding color to my face. Honestly, I haven’t really used the powder since I’m so obsessed with my one by Mally, but I love the bronzer and the blush. The bronzer is the perfect dark shade to contour and the blush is bright and natural looking and adds the perfect flush of color. The palette is a bit pricey, but worth it.

Fashion

  1. Tee Shirts– As boring as this sounds, I’ve been enjoying wearing just plain old oversized tee shirts lately. I really like to be comfortable, especially when it’s so hot and sweaty out. Still, I think big tee shirts are extremely cute paired with some cute sneakers and high waisted shorts. Cute, casual, and comfortable. (BTW I linked a cute one for you to check out!) IMG_2803.JPG
  2. Twist-Front Crop Top– This has been one of my favorite pieces to wear lately because it is such a cute little top, and so versatile! I wear it with jeans and sneakers, or I’ll pair it with some high waisted shorts and sandals. I also love to dress it up a little by pairing it with my corduroy skirt and a denim jacket. IMG_2895.JPG
  3. Bralettes Bralettes are the best for summer because they aren’t as restricting as a regular bra and go perfect under cutoff tanks and backless tops. I might be biased since I used to work there, but my favorite place to buy bralettes is definitely Aerie. IMG_2904.JPG
  4. Sneakers– I love wearing sneakers when it’s still a bit breezy out. I also find them way more comfortable for walking on the boardwalk than flip flops because there is no toe chafing! I particularly love my Adidas, Converse, and Vans even though they’ve all gotten super run down because I wear them so often!IMG_2907.JPG
  5. Open Cardigans and Tanks– Since it’s still a little chilly some days, I like to wear loose sweaters and cardigans on top of my tank tops. Layering is perfect when the weather is still constantly fluctuating.IMG_2733.JPG

Entertainment

  1. Big Little Lies– I just started watching this show so I’m not very far in, but I’m already hooked. Also, I want to note how awesome this cast is. I definitely recommend.
  2. 13 Reasons Why Who isn’t talking about this show?? I wanted to see what all of the hype was about so I decided to check it out. I’m definitely not as obsessed with the show as some people are and I do think the show has its flaws, but it’s still an intriguing show. Plus, Clay Jenson is the cutest creature to ever walk the earth.
  3. Invisible Monsters– I started reading this before and got sidetracked with school and never was able to finish, so i started again. I was obsessed with this book from the start. Chuck Palahniuk never disappoints.
  4. Empire of the Sun– I just discussed this band in my last post because I was lucky enough to see them live, but I decided they were worth mentioning again. Swordfish Hotkiss Night is the ultimate jam.
  5. The Killers– I’m so excited because I get to see one of my favorite bands perform in a few weeks!! I’m so excited that I’ve been nonstop blasting the Killers ever since I bought the tickets (aka like 3 months ago).
  6. Poshmark– One of my favorite apps, Postmark allows me to sell clothes I no longer wear and buy clothes from others for affordable prices. I use Postmark constantly and find it a great way to earn some extra spending money. Check out my closet!
  7. Duolingo– I really want to brush up on my Italian and this app lets me practice and overall is really effective. Not to mention, it’s free!
  8. MyFitnessPal– I’ve been really trying to eat healthier and this app is one I always go back to. I’m able to keep track of what I eat and check my calories. It also breaks down the nutrition so I can see how much protein, carbs, etc. that I’ve consumed. This app also allows you to set goals. For example, you’re goal might be to lose .5 pounds each week. The app tells you how many calories and such you should consume to achieve this goal.
  9. That Poppy– I’ve been really addicted to Poppy lately and I can’t tell if I like it or not. Her music is awesome no doubt, Lowlife is a great song for the summer. Her channel; however, is a bit strange, yet I can’t stop watching?? Her vids are definitely a bit odd and I wish she were to give a meaning for it all, but I’m definitely hooked and can’t stop watching.
  10. Sarah Baska– I discovered Sarah last summer and I’ve loved her ever since. I’ve been catching up on her videos lately now that classes are done for the summer and I can’t stop watching. She’s absolutely hilarious and her videos never fail to make me laugh.

Food

  1. DIY Trail Mix– Lately, I’ve been snacking on trail mix that I create myself with whatever I have in the house. I try to keep it as healthy as possible by mixing together some cashews, dried cranberries, dark chocolate, and pretzels. It makes the perfect snack to munch on.
  2. Bananas and Peanut Butter– Bananas and peanut butter are a perfect combination and a great snack. I love eating this if I want a quick snack before bed or sometimes even for breakfast. I also like making peanut butter and banana sandwiches for lunch because basically I’m obsessed with this combination. 10/10 would recommend.

Hope you all enjoyed your month of May and found something in this article worth checking out! Everything is linked!

Radio 104.5 Birthday Show

Hey people! Last weekend I went to the Radio 104.5 Birthday Show day one and I wanted to tell you all about it! I’ve been to a few concerts before, but this was my first time ever attending any sort of music festival and although it wasn’t as crazy or exciting as Coachella or Firefly, it was still pretty cool!

I didn’t have great seats, I was actually on the lawn so I wasn’t close at all. Still, I found this just as satisfying as a typical general admission concert because I always have such a hard time seeing past people’s heads, and at least on the lawn I had a clear view of the stage. Unfortunately, it was a poor day for a concert. It was raining all day and was extremely muddy and chilly. I missed a lot of the performers, but I did get to see Fitz and the Tantrums, the 1975, Empire of the Sun, and Bastille.

Fitz and the Tantrums sound amazing live, literally identical to the album. I really enjoyed the performance and honestly just listening to Michael Fitzpatrick’s voice. Their performance of Handclap was awesome and overall, they kicked the concert off to a great start for me.

I’ve seen the 1975 twice before, but honestly seeing them live just never gets old. Matty Healy is so entertaining to watch with his unique dance moves and cigarettes on stage. They performed all of my favorite songs EXCEPT my all time favorite, Robbers. I was extremely disappointed. Still, I was surprised and excited they performed Heart Out because I wasn’t expecting that. Although I like the 1975’s second album, nothing quite tops their first.

Empire of the Sun had to be my favorite performance by far. Seeing them perform a few songs actually felt like a tease and now I’m determined to go to one of their concerts. They are by far the most entertaining. I already love their music as is, but they really do have a performance for each song. They have dancers and smoke and costumes, and basically to sum it up, this performance was definitely the most visually stimulating. I would highly recommend trying to see these guys live.

Bastille was also great live and I got to hear them sing Flaws which I was super excited about. Unfortunately, by this time I was sore and cold and tired and did not make it through the entirety of Bastille’s performance which was disappointing. What was even more disappointing was I didn’t get to see Kings of Leon at all!! (sad face) Still, I had a great time at this concert and definitely got my money’s worth despite the rain, mud, and being so far from the stage. I had a great time and I can’t wait for day 2!
